Playa de Tapahuga La Gomera is a peaceful beach just a few kilometres east of Playa Santiago town centre. The steep rocky beach means that it isn’t very family-friendly, but it is great for anyone in search of solitude.

An Introduction To La Gomera Beaches

La Gomera’s mild climate means its stunning beaches can be enjoyed year-round. However, if you are searching for long white beaches with endless lines of sun loungers, La Gomera may not be the place for you.

A typical La Gomera beach is small with black volcanic sand or shingle. Picture quiet (almost deserted) bays with crystal clear turquoise waters between dramatic craggy cliffs.

Some beaches within the towns are busier with amenities nearby, while others can only be reached via boat or on foot. However, if you are prepared to walk, you are often rewarded with an entire beach to yourself.

However, a word of caution is that swimming in the sea on La Gomera can be dangerous, especially during the winter. The island can be windy with large waves and powerful currents, especially during high tide.

Some beaches aren’t suitable for swimming (especially for children) at any time of year, while others are more sheltered and generally safe. Before swimming on any La Gomera beach, we recommend you take the advice of a local tourist office.

An Overview Of Playa De Tapahuga La Gomera

Playa de Tapahuga (sometimes spelled Playa de Tapachuga) is easy to access from Playa Santiago but is quiet and a good place to escape the crowds.

People were camping there when we visited, including some in makeshift shelters at the base of the cliffs. You may also come across nudists here.

A narrow road runs along a wall along the west side of the bay. Historically, this was a loading area for bananas that were being shipped across Tenerife. Today, it is occupied by the occasional person fishing.

This is a beautiful beach with a steep beach and crashing waves. The only downside for me was the abandoned buildings, which I found to be an eyesore.

There are a few things it is worth noting before visiting this beach:

  1. Sunburn – The coastal winds on La Gomera mean that sunburn is common. The sun here is powerful, and the cooling breeze can fool you into thinking you are not at risk.
  2. Stones – The beach is a mix of stone and rock, and it is very difficult to walk barefoot, so take suitable shoes for the water if you plan on going in.
  3. Winds, Waves and Tides – It is worth repeating that all beaches on La Gomera can be dangerous. We did see people swimming at Playa de Tapahuga, but the beach is steep, and the waves are quite large. Make sure you are fully aware of the conditions before swimming here.

Playa de Tapahuga is easily accessible by road. The beach lies east of Playa Santiago, around a 2km drive from Hotel Tecina or 4km from the town centre. Parking is easy as a large free car park is behind the beach.

You can also walk to this beach if you are feeling energetic. Playa de Tapahuga is 4km from the centre of Playa Santiago, but it is a steep climb over the cliff. Unfortunately, there isn’t a route around the base of the cliff.

Amenities At Playa De Tapahuga La Gomera

Amenities are limited at Playa de Tapahuga. There aren’t any cafes or restaurants at the beach, just a few deserted buildings. However, there is a cooking area with covered seating and grills where you can barbecue food.
