Playa de la Cueva is one of two beaches in the port town of San Sebastian. It lies directly next to the town’s port, has good amenities and is just a few minutes walk from San Sebastian’s centre.
Playa de la Cueva is an attractive beach (despite being next to the port,) and it has excellent views across the water to Mount Teide volcano on Tenerife. This beach can be windy, but the cliffs and the sea wall behind it provide shelter from the sun.
Playa de la Cueva is one of the sandier beaches on La Gomera, but it still has some rocky areas. The water is relatively sheltered by the promenade wall, but caution should still be used when swimming there.
If you have spare time, walk up to the Monumento de la Antorcha Olímpica México 1968. This replica Olympic torch is built on top of a rocky outcrop at the end of the promenade.
Walk up the steps to the top of the monument, and you will be rewarded with a great view of San Sebastian. Access to the monument can be found at the south end of the promenade through a small tunnel (shown in the image below).

- Sunburn – The coastal winds on La Gomera mean that sunburn is common. The sun here is powerful, and the cooling breeze can fool you into thinking you are not at risk. Also, wind is now believed to reduce the skin’s natural protection against UV rays.
- Stones – The beach is a mix of sand and stone and may be difficult to walk on with bare feet, so take suitable shoes for the water if you plan on going in.
- Winds, Waves and Tides – it is worth repeating that all beaches on La Gomera can be subject to these, so make sure you are fully aware of the conditions before swimming.

Playa de la Cueva La Gomera is accessible by car, although there is limited parking next to the beach. There is free roadside parking in the town and several car parks, so it is unlikely that you will need to walk more than 5-10 from your parking spot.
